Shannon did such a great job describing the best weekend ever, I'm just going to use her LJ post with proper editing:
"These past two days spent with (Shannon) have been very enlightening. How so, you ask? Let me tell you. We discovered the last quote of the great Moses Usher as he was stoned to death a hundred years ago by the citizens of Independence: "These rocks hurt...but you're dumb." We had many awesome conversations, smoked many mild cigarettes (in places I wouldn't feel guilty smoking...not places like graveyards and children's parks) and told many stories including that of "The Legend." We trekked across the great city of Independence, stopping only to eat at Panera and go to Miss Priss, seeing everything from the tranquil woods to "the animal of independence park." We put on our "birding" glasses and saw the sights of Independence, taking everything in. We saw the "King of the Road", his small wagon jacked up feet off the ground due to the enormous/comical tires he had on his car. We saw the eternal frat boys, playing beer pong in their garage weeks after school let out. Most importantly, we saw none other than the "big foot" of Independence (title bearing on his elusiveness, not his large foot size) and we basked in the glory of the back of his head. From this we learned: You don't always have to buy your cards at CVS...there is such an animal as the Hallmark.
But our enlightenment does not end in the city of Independence, oh no. We went to the Case Book sale that day and purchased many a book. I myself purchased:
An anthology of the best Russian short stories
The Possessed by Dostoyevsky
The Idiot by Dostoyevssky
Raise High the Roof Beam Carpenters & Seymour by J.D. Salinger
The short stories of Flannery O'Connor
Notes from the Underground & The Grand Inquisitor by Dostoyevsky
Medieval Russia's Epics Chrononicles and Tales
Finally
Winesburg, Ohio by Anderson
while I purchased
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
The Picture of Dorien Grey by Oscar Wilde
Dead Souls by Gogol
The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn
This Gun for Hire, The Confidential Agent & The Ministry of Fear by Graham Greene
next day I purchased
Eat Dessert First And other ways to take a recess from being a grown-up.
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson (for Trey)
Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot
Oscar Wilde: His Life and Confessions by Frank Harris
All in all it was one of the best days I can remember in a long time. Feel free to add anything I've forgotten to the list, Meggie. (Pshaw, heck yes) We will do this again, only this time we'll pack a lunch and let nothing get in our way of Moses' Gazebo.
THE END
